Amateur Archaeology
In the summer of 2004, I was hiking in the Karpaz peninsula of Cyprus with Ben Moritz, friend and colleague from Eastern Mediterranean University. At the top of a 100+ meter hill, we found a small opening in the ground in which was buried a large pithos containing a hoard of fine bronze objects, dating from ca. 1200 BC. Ongoing salvage excavations by a team of German archaeologists has since uncovered a previously unknown center of Bronze Age Cyprus. The settlement has revealed foundations of a palace and storage vessels for vast amounts of liquids (oil, perfume, drugs), which indicate the site was at the heart of an extensive international trade network... read more
